Jordan thwarts major plot to destabilize national security

Amman [Jordan], April 16: Jordan's Intelligence Department said on Tuesday it has thwarted a series of plots aimed at undermining national security, inciting chaos and causing material sabotage within the kingdom. In a statement, the intelligence directorate confirmed the arrest of 16 individuals involved in the plans.
Government spokesman and Minister of State Communications Mohammad al-Momani said during a press briefing that the cell of individuals had been closely monitored since 2021.
The uncovered plots included the illegal manufacturing of missiles using locally sourced tools and imported machinery, possession of explosive materials and firearms, and the concealment of a ready-to-use missile.
Additionally, the plans involved a project to manufacture drones, as well as the recruitment and training of individuals both inside Jordan and abroad.
State television channel Al-Mamlaka (The Kingdom) showed images of secret storage facilities that the security forces have now discovered. According to the report, the cell consisted of three main operatives.
The mastermind, Ibrahim Mohammad, who is linked to the unlicensed Muslim Brotherhood, initiated the plan to illegally produce rockets in Jordan. The organization has been banned in Jordan since 2020.
Mohammad is already on trial before the State Security Court in a separate case involving the transport and storage of around 30 kilograms of powerful explosives.
The report disclosed that Mohammad arranged for two members, Abdullah Hisham and Moath al-Ghanem, to travel to Lebanon for coordination and training with a Beirut-based organizational contact. The report did not disclose the identity of the of the Beirut-based organization. The report said that the cell members were arrested in February. (DPA)
